Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Microwave or oven (for heat-treating flour)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup 1 stick butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3-4 tablespoons milk dairy or non-dairy
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips or chunks optional

Instructions

  • Heat-Treat the Flour: To ensure the flour is safe to eat, spread it on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 5 minutes, or microwave in a bowl for 90-120 seconds, stirring every 30 seconds. Allow to cool.
  • Mix Wet Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Whisk until well combined. Add the vanilla extract and mix.
  • Add Dry Ingredients: Stir in the heat-treated flour, cocoa powder, and salt until the mixture is well combined.
  • Adjust Consistency: Gradually add milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is reached.
  • Add Mix-Ins: Fold in chocolate chips or chunks, if using.
  • Serve: Enjoy immediately or refrigerate for a firmer texture.
